Raqs Sharqi simply means eastern dance, but usually refers to Egyptian dance. I first encountered Raqs Sharqi about 25 years ago and started attending classes. I then joined a two year training course with the extraordinary and gifted dancer Suraya Hilal.
Over the last 15 years I’ve taught many classes and workshops in the UK, Italy and Greece, been a Management Board Member of the Raqs Sharqi Society and participated in many community performances as dancer, choreographer, director and producer.
Raqs Sharqi is an exceptionally vibrant and joyful dance form which can quickly be enjoyed by beginners as well as offering huge opportunities for technical and interpretive development at a more advanced level. As with any dance form, Moving Mindfully material can be of significant value in enhancing the dancer’s movement range and command of energy.
